Bay Vets are awarded internationally-recognised Cat Friendly Clinic Status

We know cats are highly susceptible to stress and a visit to the vet can be stress-inducing. They don’t well tolerate travelling or being out of their familiar environments.

They tend to prefer quiet solitude.

Nearby dogs or other cats further disturb them and then there’s the examination and possible treatment required, where they must be treated gently and with respect, which cannot be rushed.

To be accredited, we have committed to addressing all the above at a very minimum, ensuring the entire team: reception, auxiliaries, nurses and vets have received up-to-date training relating to promoting best cat welfare. We have dedicated “Cat Advocates” who continuously promote best practice.

We have team members who especially love cats and making a difference in their lives so have completed additional qualifications too: Dr Susi Fernandez-Parker PGCert (Feline Medicine) AVP MRCVS holds a post graduate certificate in feline medicine. Kate and Diane, two of our Student Vet Nurses, hold the ISFM Certificate in Feline Nursing and Diane has a further diploma in Feline Psychology and Behaviour also.

Our Cat Advocates

The International Society of Feline Medicine launched the Cat Friendly Clinic initiative to encourage Veterinary practices everywhere to make best efforts to improve the welfare of cats in their care. The programme advises practices on how to make their environment as welcoming to cats and their owners as possible, as well as providing support in staff training, handling techniques and cat specific client care.

We also have facility and equipment adjustments for hospitalisation (kennels, hides and beds), examination (techniques and time allocated to them), and species-specific anaesthesia, surgery, dental work and imaging protocols.

Essentially, every aspect from entering the building to leaving is considered and adapted to furthest reduce stress for cat and owner.

Please feel free to speak to Joanne or Diane with any concerns you may have or for advice on how to keep your cat happy and healthy.
