As we ring in the new year, it’s natural to want to make some resolutions that will ultimately contribute to our self-improvement. However, if you’re a pet owner, why not include your four-legged friend in the process? This is ideal if you find it hard to stick to promises you make for yourself – it might be the case that going the extra mile to improve the wellbeing of your beloved pet is the motivation you need to make your resolutions stick this year. Take a look at our top new year’s resolutions for pet owners.

1.  Exercise More

It’s no secret that exercise is important for our physical and mental wellbeing, but joining the gym seems like a great idea come January, but we never actually end up going. So, if your goal is to exercise more this year, getting your pet involved is a great solution. A 2018 PDSA report found that 1.3 million dogs don’t get walked every day, so ensuring that you make time for at least two walks a day with your pooch can be beneficial for both of you. If you have a cat, you can schedule in some extra playtime instead.

2.  Healthy Eating

We’re all a little guilty of overindulging around Christmas, and sometimes this can even affect our pets (although, naturally, you should always try and feed them a balanced diet no matter what time of year it is). January is a great time to cut back on the snacking and try to eat healthier, nutritious foods – for both of you!

If you have any questions about your pet’s diet, pop into your vet and get some nutrition advice – it will help to ensure that you’re catering to the specific needs of your four-legged friend, and your vet might even have some pet food recommendations.

3.  Taking Extra Care

Christmas is always a busy time, so it’s no wonder that many of us make resolutions around taking time to care for ourselves better, and this sentiment can be extended to the care of your pet. If you feel that you and your pet haven’t spent any quality time together recently, make sure to schedule in some time to bond, such as giving their fur a good brush. Your pet will appreciate it, not to mention that it’ll be great for your mental health too.
